Definition: protocol conversion

Hardware or software that lets two different network technologies participate in a data exchange. Protocol conversion may be used to support any two different network types, but it is often used to allow older networks to exist with modern networks such as TCP/IP. The actual operation involves replacing the headers in each packet as they enter or leave the device, which is generally the user's computer. See packet header and TCP/IP.
