Encrypting DNS requests. Whenever a user goes to a website or any other entity over the Internet, the DNS system converts the name (Apple.com, Google.com, etc.) to the IP address of the server. With private DNS, the entire query along with the IP address is encrypted so anyone nearby using the same public Wi-Fi hotspot cannot hack and decipher the request.
Private DNS can be configured in the settings of a phone as well as on a desktop computer. In some phones, private DNS is automatically configured. However, if not pre-configured, desktop and phone users have to enter the IP address of a private DNS server. See
