Definition: PHEV

(Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) A PHEV is a combination electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). However, unlike a hybrid, which switches back and forth between gas and battery, a plug-in hybrid typically runs on battery until there is almost no charge left and then switches to gas. Depending on the make of vehicle and providing they charge at home every evening, daily commuters with a round trip of 20 to 50 miles can run on battery exclusively to achieve the greatest economy.

The plug-in hybrid offers a way to test the EV waters without the danger of running out of fuel in areas with limited charging stations. However, an all-electric vehicle provides the best fuel economy under all driving conditions. See electric vehicle types.
