Definition: plug and hope

(1) Attaching a device to a computer or plugging equipment into an electric outlet and hoping it will work.

(2) The frustration of installing additional peripheral devices on DOS and Windows 3.x PCs back in the 1980s and early 1990s. The situation was mostly alleviated with the advent of the Plug and Play specification in the mid-1990s. See plug and play and plug and tell.
