Definition: personally identifiable information

Information that can identify an individual. Other than the obvious name, address and phone number, examples of personally identifiable information (PII) include date of birth, email address, phone numbers, driver's license and vehicle registration numbers, passport and credit card numbers, biometric data, as well as website logins. Also called "sensitive personal information" (SPI).
