Definition: paywall

Restricted access to online visitors who have not paid a fee. For example, many newspaper and magazine websites have paywalls that allow anyone to read a few articles per month for free. In order to read more, a subscription fee is required. Some people have set their browsers to private mode to circumvent the website from keeping track of visits, but website software has become more sophisticated and some sites can detect when the browser is set to surf anonymously. See private browsing and walled garden.
