To speed up a processor beyond the manufacturer's specifications in order to run faster. Common in the gaming world, overclocking the GPU, CPU or both is accomplished by changing the clock ratio in the BIOS for the CPU and using overclocking software for the GPU.
Older CPU overclocking methods were changing a jumper on the motherboard and replacing the clock crystal. Although enhanced cooling systems are typically added when a processor is overclocked, over time, the chips and motherboard may not be able to handle the increased speed. GPU temperatures must be monitored to be in the safe range of 185-200 degrees Fahrenheit. CPUs are safe in the 140-175 degree range. Contrast with
