Definition: organizer


(1) Software that provides a calendar, to-do list and other daily management tools.

(2) A dedicated electronic device that was used to schedule appointments and tasks. Prior to smartphones, personal information managers (PIMs), which had a fixed number of functions, were very popular. After smartphones, dedicated portable devices such as the PIM, music player and GPS navigation began to disappear, because smartphones perform all those functions and countless others. A Computer Is an Organizer
The Spanish and French words for computer are "ordenador" and "ordinateur," which mean organizer and are perhaps better words for a device that is used so much for organization. See ordinateur and computers are copy machines.




Organizer vs. Smartphone
Devices such as this Texas Instruments organizer from the early 1990s (left) were very popular until smartphones came along. The Samsung Galaxy Note (right) was thinner, lighter and could run hundreds of apps and games.
