Definition: open model

A product available to everyone or one that is easily adapted or integrated into other products. For example, open source software can be downloaded and modified by anyone. The PC is an open model. Anyone can build a PC or create parts for it. Contrast with "closed model," such as an Apple Mac. Although the Mac accepts memory and storage from any manufacturer, nobody can build a Mac-like computer that runs everything the Mac does. See open source.
