Definition: open model

A product available to everyone or one that is easily adapted or integrated into other products. For example, open-source software can be downloaded and modified by anyone. The PC is an open model. Anyone can build a PC or create parts for it. Contrast with "closed model," such as an Apple Mac. Although the Mac accepts memory and storage from any manufacturer, nobody can build a Mac-like computer that runs everything the Mac does. See open source.
