Definition: open data

Content that can be freely shared by anyone for any purpose. After the Internet became accessible to everyone in the mid-1990s, open data became a major theme due to the ease in which information could be disseminated globally. The vast majority of public information on the Web is open; however, there is a huge amount of information that was copied without permission and published without attribution. See open source and plagiarism.
