Definition: on the Internet

Coming from the Internet. Very often, the expression "on the Internet" really means "on the Web" because all e-commerce and business conducted over the Internet is from a website.

The Internet is a transport network, and the only thing technically "on" the Internet are the pulses between servers connected to the Internet and a user's phone, tablet or computer connected to the Internet. "Over the Internet" is the more accurate language; for example, "I bought that over the Internet." However, "on the Internet" and "over the Internet" are used synonymously. See website and Internet.
