Definition: Substack

An online newsletter platform. Launched in 2017, Substack enables writers to create a publication and solicit readers to open a free or paid subscription. While journalists use Substack to target local politics and news, many write personal articles and stories. Thousands of people have created newsletters on Substack, and although millions of people read them, more than half a million are paying subscribers.

Lose Your Job, Publish on Substack
Although plenty of amateurs publish on Substack, like they do on every other media platform, seasoned journalists who quit or lost their jobs have turned to Substack to earn a living. Obviously the more of a following they had from their previous engagements, the better they do on Substack. At the June 2025 Future of Influence event in Los Angeles, Substack CEO Chris Best said more than 50 publishers on the platform earn more than a million dollars per year.

Machined by Dan Costa
