Definition: navigation system
An electronic system in a vehicle or mobile device that provides a real-time map of the current location and step-by-step directions to a requested destination. Often called a "GPS," a navigation system (nav) receives signals from the satellite-based global positioning system (see GPS). See reality view, Google Maps, Waze, CarPlay, Android Auto, in-dash navigation and portable GPS.
The Next Turn
An Invaluable Cross-Street Feature
When in destination mode, every nav highlights the next turn. In this example from a Hyundai SUV, the next turn in 1.3 miles (upper right) is the Coastal Highway in the state of Delaware.
Street signs are hard to see under normal conditions and often impossible at night. This Garmin unit always displays the next cross-street ahead in a very readable font unless it is in destination mode, where the next turn would be displayed.
