Definition: cursor


(1) See database cursor.

(2) The symbol pointing to elements on screen. In Windows, Mac and other graphics-based screens, the cursor, also called a "pointer," changes shape as it moves into different areas. For example, it starts out as an arrow on the desktop and turns into an I-shaped symbol over text and a pointing finger over a link. On command lines, the cursor is a square or rectangle. (3) A pen-like or puck-like device used with a digitizer tablet. Officially called the "tablet cursor," as it is moved across the tablet, the screen cursor moves correspondingly. See digitizer tablet.

(4) (Cursor) An AI-based integrated development environment (IDE) for Visual Studio coding from Anysphere Inc., a company founded by four friends at MIT. Introduced in 2023, Cursor can autocomplete statements and generate code based on natural language prompts. See AI programming.
