Definition: mixed mode


The combination of analog and digital processing. It typically refers to the capabilities of a single chip that performs both functions. For example, a chip may contain analog to digital (ADC) and/or digital to analog (DAC) conversion along with a microprocessor or state machine for digital processing. In cellphones and wireless LANs, transceiver chips (transmit/receive chips) combine analog and digital components. See microprocessor, DSP and state machine. See also Mixed Mode CD.
