Definition: digital wallet


(1) An application that holds a user's cryptocurrency. See crypto wallet and Bitcoin wallet.

(2) An application that holds a user's government-based digital currency. See CBDC.

(3) A mobile application for making financial transactions in a retail store. See smartphone wallet and mobile payment service.

(4) A desktop application for making credit card purchases online without manually entering card numbers. The data either reside in the cloud or are encrypted in the user's computer. Digital wallets may store other ID such as insurance cards and drivers licenses.

Merchant Wallets
To make online ordering painless, for years, large e-commerce sites such as Amazon.com have stored their customers' credit card data on their own servers.
