Definition: media sensing


(1) A feature of a network adapter that determines whether a connection to the network is present.

(2) A feature of an ink jet printer that detects the type of paper being fed in order to adjust print settings for optimal printing. For example, certain HP printers include HP's Auto Sense feature that detects paper size and type of non-HP printer paper as well as premium HP paper that contains Auto Sense marks.
