Definition: local network
A data communications network within a home or office. "Local network," "local area network" and "LAN" are synonymous. The local network standards are TCP/IP, Ethernet and Wi-Fi. See LAN.
The Bottom Layers
The local network (LAN) comprises the bottom two layers of the OSI reference model. However, the bottom four layers are responsible for sending a complete message or file from one station to another without error. See TCP/IP and Ethernet.
