Definition: isotope

(2) A chemical element that has the same number of protons (same atomic number) but differs in mass due to a different number of neutrons. Isotopes are created via radioactive decay; however, artificial isotopes are created in particle accelerators and nuclear reactors. See allotrope, atom and rare earth elements.
