Definition: instant secure erase

A drive erasure method that provides a fast way to delete all the data quickly when required. Instant secure erase (ISE) encrypts the drive, and when it is time to permanently delete all the data on the drive, only the encryption key has to be deleted. This method deletes the drive in a few seconds compared to a secure erase, which writes over all the sectors and can take many minutes if not hours. See secure delete.
