Definition: instant secure erase

A storage erasure method that deletes all the data on the drive very quickly. Instant secure erase (ISE) encrypts the drive, and when it is time to permanently delete the entire drive, only the encryption key has to be deleted. This deletes the entire drive in seconds compared to a secure erase, which writes over all the sectors that depending on drive size, can take minutes if not hours. See secure delete.
