The first model of Apple's smartphone, which debuted in June 2007. The 2G was not part of the original iPhone branding and does not refer to the second generation. The 2G desgination was added later by users to differentiate the models after the iPhone 3G debuted in 2008. The 2G referred to EDGE, the second generation data service at that time. The 2G EDGE technology was painfully slow, and the faster iPhone 3G was welcomed with great enthusiasm. See
