Introduced in 2013, the iPad Air debuted as Apple's thinnest and, except for the iPad mini, the lightest Apple tablet. In 2014, a barometer and Touch ID fingerprint sensor were included. However, in 2024, the iPad Pro rivaled the Air in weight and thinness (see
iPad Pro).
A Four-Year Hiatus
As regular iPads became lighter, Air models were discontinued in 2015 but were resurrected in 2019. In 2022, the first Air to use Apple's new M1 chip was introduced (see
