iPad models named for their light weight. Introduced in late 2013, Air models had the same 9.7" screen and 2048x1536 resolution as previous iPads but were thinner and lighter. In 2014, a barometer and Touch ID fingerprint sensor were included. The rear camera jumped from 5 to 8 megapixels, and faster Wi-Fi (802.11ac) was added.
A Four-Year Hiatus
As regular iPads became lighter, Air models were discontinued in 2015 but were resurrected in 2019. In 2022, the 5th generation bumped the camera to 12MP and Wi-Fi to 802.11ax. It was the first Air model to use Apple's new M1 chip. See
