Definition: iNaturalist

A social media platform for sharing biodiversity information. Launched in 2008 as a Master's final project at UC Berkely School of Information, iNaturalist enables people to identify objects from nature. Using the website and especially the mobile apps, more than 300 million observations of plants, animals and fungi have been identified to date. People can also register data on the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) website, which was founded in 2001. GBIF aggregates data from numerous sources, including iNaturalist.
