(2) A bypassed vehicle ignition system. In order to steal a car or start it when the keys are not available, vehicles up to the mid-1990s can be started by stripping the starter and power wires and briefly connecting them. Newer models are designed with safety systems that make it very difficult, if not impossible, to hotwire.
