Definition: host adapter

Also called a "controller" or "host bus adapter," a host adapter is circuitry that connects one or more peripheral units to a computer. Host adapters were common in early PCs, but all the circuits on those cards were later built into a single chip on the motherboard (see PC chipset). See host and PC data buses.
