Definition: host operating system

The first OS installed in a computer. In a virtual machine environment, there may be a host operating system that interacts with the virtual machine monitor, which manages the virtual machines. Contrast with a "bare metal" hypervisor, in which the virtual machine monitor is the base operating system in the computer. For details, see virtual machine monitor.
