Definition: geocoding

(GEOgraphic enCODING) Geocoding is the conversion of a physical location to its east/west (longitude) and north/south (latitude) coordinates. For example, the coordinates of the center of Barcelona are 41 degrees 23 minutes North and 2 degrees 10 minutes East. Geocoding can pinpoint a location very accurately; for example, six decimal points in the degree reading comes within 11 centimeters on earth. Reverse geocoding does the opposite (from coordinates to a physical address). See latitude and what3words.
