Definition: function key

A set of keyboard keys from F1 to F12 that are programmed by the operating system or application to perform some task. The function key can be used alone or in combination with Shift, Control and Alt for Windows or Shift, Option and Command for macOS. While some apps support function keys, most do not. A counterpart utility is a macro processor that enables strings of text to be programmed (see keyboard macro processor). For the additional function key on laptops, see Fn key.

Across the Top and Side
Function keys (F keys) are typically located in a horizontal row above the numeric keys (top), but some keyboards have them duplicated on the left side. Fast touch typists feel the left-side keys are easier to access.

Special Function Keys
Many keyboards have additional keys for launching applications, playing media and opening folders (see special function key).

A Different Function Key
Although "Fn" stands for "function," the Fn key is entirely different from F1, F2, etc. Holding down Fn activates a dual-purpose key (see Fn key).
