Definition: foreign exchange service

A telephone service that provides a local telephone number to a location outside of the customer's calling area. The telephone company creates a private line between the local telephone central office and the remote central office (foreign exchange). When customers dial the local number, they get a dial tone in the foreign exchange. A foreign exchange "service" is not the same as a foreign exchange "station" (see FXS).
