Definition: file transfer program

A program that transmits files from one computer to another either locally or via the Internet. File transfer programs are widely used to upload and download files from a server on the Internet. Using FTP commands, files can be transferred as well; however, file transfer utilities make connecting and sending much easier (see FTP).

Local Transfer
Two computers side by side can be cabled together for file transfer via USB or Ethernet. In the past, the parallel and serial ports were widely used for this purpose. See null modem cable, how to transfer a file and file transfer service.
