Definition: USB drive kit

A do-it-yourself kit for creating a stand-alone storage drive that connects via USB. The kit contains a frame to which a standard drive is mounted and connected, using the same power and signal cables as if it were installed inside the computer. The frame is pushed into the case, and the drive is ready for use. Drive kits are available for SATA and eSATA interfaces, and earlier kits were used for IDE and FireWire interfaces. See USB drive adapter and portable hard drive.

The Drive Kit
A drive mounts inside the kit just as it would inside a PC.
