Definition: e-voting

(Electronic-Voting) Using a computer-based machine to display an election ballot and tabulate the vote. Using touchscreens as the data entry method, these devices are very controversial because they do not provide a paper trail for auditing. Without an audit trail, there is no simple way of detecting a programming error or hack. Starting in 2004, e-voting machines have been used for approximately 25% of all votes cast in presidential elections. See GEMS.
