Definition: e-highway

(Electric-HIGHWAY) An electrically-augmented road. In 2012, Siemens began trials in Germany that work like trolley cars. Hybrid diesel-electric trucks are fitted with rods that are raised when entering the roads with overhead electric lines at speeds up to 60 mph. To reduce smog in California, pilot projects of the Siemens system are expected at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach in the future. See self-driving car and hyperlane.

Trials in Germany
In 2012, Siemens began trials of its e-highway system in Germany. The advantage of the trolley approach is that the overhead wires can be added to existing highways. (Image courtesy of Siemens AG.)
