Adjusting the LED backlight in an LCD TV or monitor on the fly to create a higher contrast ratio. When a dark image is displayed, the LEDs are dimmed or turned off behind the pixels. When light areas are displayed, the pixels are artificially brightened by turning up the LEDs. See
