Definition: Fn key


(FuNction key) The Fn key, used mainly on laptop computers to save space, activates a built-in secondary function in selected F1-F12 keys or navigation keys. Like the Shift key, the Fn key is held down while the dual-purpose key is pressed. For example, Fn + Up Arrow might switch to Page Up. See function key, navigation key and computer keyboard.

In this example, holding Fn down and pressing F11 lowers speaker volume. Fn + F12 raises it.
