Definition: computational storage drive
A solid state storage drive that contains its own processing capability in order to remove some of the burden from the computer's CPU. Typically aimed at server CPUs, common computational storage drive (CSD) functions are compression and encryption. Security may also be provided. However, any type of processing can be performed in a CSD, including searching and analysis, all of which allow the computer's CPU cores to be used for the primary data processing activities of the business. The SmartSSD from Samsung
Touted as the first adaptable computational storage platform, Samsung's SmartSSD contains an FPGA chip from Xilinx that can be programmed to perform processing tasks at the drive.
