Definition: distracted driving

(1) The preoccupation with texting and using a smartphone while driving. See intexticated.

(2) The preoccupation with modern automotive infotainment systems. Although most built-in navigation units do not allow setting a new destination when the vehicle is moving (although voice commands may be allowed), there are countless touchscreen options that are always active. For example, tuning radio stations, adjusting climate control and viewing the electric-gas motor operation in hybrids require drivers to take their eyes off the road for a few seconds at a time. Fortunately, safety features such as collision avoidance are increasingly available in new cars. See adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance system.
