Definition: data cap

The limit to the amount of data transfer allowed per customer per month stipulated in a cellular or ISP contract. Cellular carriers and satellite ISPs generally have a data cap, while land-based ISPs may or may not. However, if several members of a household stream a lot of video, even a 1TB data cap can be reached, and the next monthly bill will have overage charges. See carrier data plans and ISP.
