Definition: crypto symbol

(1) The abbreviated name of a cryptocurrency's coin or token for trading purposes, which is similar to a stock symbol on the stock market. For example, BTC is Bitcoin; ETH is Ethereum. For a compilation of thousands of symbols, visit CryptoCompare.com. See native cryptocurrency and crypto glossary.

(2) A cryptocurrency's logo. Cryptocurrencies are given logos, and very often only the logo is displayed to represent the crypto. Because of the popularity of Bitcoin and Ethereum, their logos are generally recognized. However, websites often identify lesser-known coins by displaying only their logos, which is very confusing until people become familiar with the designs.

Logos and Abbreviations
These were the top ten cryptos listed on CryptoCompare on November 2, 2023. Both the symbol and crypto abbreviation are displayed. USDC and FDUSD are stablecoins. See CryptoCompare and stablecoin.

Sometimes Just the Logo
Showing only the logo to represent ether (Ethereum), this came from the OpenSea marketplace next to an NFT image for sale. With ether at $4,523 in late 2021, the logo and 1 means 1 ETH is the minimum bid. See Ethereum and OpenSea.
