Definition: crypto winter
A period of falling cryptocurrency prices. The first winter was 2018 when Bitcoin lost more than three quarters of its value from a year before. Very volatile, by July 2022, Bitcoin's value was less than a third of the previous year. See NFT winter, crypto summer and crypto glossary.
Summers and Winters
December 2017 was end of the first crypto summer and beginning of the first crypto winter. Crypto investing, with Bitcoin being the bellwether, has been a roller coaster ride for many. Other cryptocurrencies also fluctuate with the same volatility as Bitcoin. "Hodlers" hang on (see hodling).
