Definition: crypto staking


(CRYPTOcurrency staking) Lending cryptocurrency in order to earn rewards in a blockchain that uses a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism such as Ethereum. In September 2022, Ethereum switched from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake (see Ethereum 2.0). Occasionally, the staking term refers to lending crypto to earn interest (see yield farming).
