Definition: computing device


Any electronic equipment controlled by a CPU (central processing unit), including desktop and laptop computers, smartphones and tablets. A computing device refers to a general-purpose machine that executes instructions for any data processing purpose. Contrast with equipment that is dedicated to a single function such as a network switch or router. See computer and CPU.




Before Computers, There Was Computing
The term computing was used as early as the 1600s to refer to people doing hand calculations. Notice the "Computing Division" sign at the upper left of this photo. In this office circa 1930, computing was performed by employees working with calculators.
