Definition: computer revolution

The impact computers have on society. Also called the "digital revolution," there have been roughly four revolutionary periods. The first was when computers began to proliferate in the 1960s, transforming business around the world. The second was during the 1980s when consumers became customers for personal computers, without which, the Internet and third revolution would not have flourished. The fourth began with smartphones and tablets. Each era changed society in myriad ways. See computer generations, ethical issues regarding technology and technodeterminism.

The Revolution Behind Everything
The heart of all these revolutions is the integrated circuit, otherwise known as the "chip," which is the most extraordinary invention of the modern era. See active area and chip.
