Definition: composable infrastructure

A datacenter architecture that treats CPU, storage, RAM and network components in servers as separate entities in order to combine them as needed. All components are treated as pools of resources. Using high-speed interconnects, composable infrastructure makes maximum use of server hardware within an enterprise.

Functioning as an internal datacenter management system, it supports the three types of server workloads: traditional physical servers; virtualized servers; and container-based servers. Composable infrastructure is also designed to support server deployments with the same freedom, benefits and flexibility offered by cloud computing providers. See cloud computing.
