Definition: cloud operating system


(1) A client-side operating system for a user's PC, such as Google's Chrome, that is designed to load all applications from the Internet or local network (the cloud). See ChromeOS.

(2) A server-side software platform that provides the complete infrastructure for setting up cloud computing services. See PaaS and cloud management system.

(3) A server-side operating system for a cloud computing environment. It may refer to the OS alone or to the virtual machine monitor (VMM) or to both components, as both are required for the virtualized environment commonly deployed in cloud computing.
