Definition: chatty protocol

A network protocol in which servers and other network devices constantly announce their availability over the network. The continuous transmission of these packets adds to network overhead. Also said to be chatty are protocols that wait for an acknowledgment before sending the next packet. In this case, the back-and-forth communication adds overhead. See broadcast.
