Definition: cellular network

A communications system that transmits and receives within a geographic radius known as a "cell." A cellular network comprises many cells, and a single cell can span an area as small as a hundred yards within a congested city or as large as 20 miles or more in flat rural areas. As people travel from one cell to another, the voice or data session migrates automatically to the next cell. See cellphone and cellular generations.
