Definition: cassette

A removable magnetic tape storage module that contains supply and take-up reels in the same housing. Most earlier audio, video and backup tapes were housed in cassettes, although the surviving archival tape technology is a single reel cartridge (see LTO). See single-hub cartridge, VCR, audio cassette and microcassette.

Supply and Take-up Reels
Cassettes always have two reels. Contrast with tape cartridge.
